Aeration is part of your regular lawn maintenance routine just like mowing, watering, fertilizing and raking leaves. Aeration should predicate overseeding. For maximum results, your lawn should be aerated once or twice per year. Golf courses aerate more frequently to maintain impeccable conditions and treat problem areas. The best time to aerate is in the spring or fall.
Spring: April 1 – June 15 (while average temperatures remain below 80⁰F)
Fall: August 15 – November 22 (depends on seeding and snowfall)
Your lawn may require more frequent aeration if you have heavy traffic from children or pets, clay soil or thatch concerns.
In most situations, aerating should be avoided in the hot summer months because it makes the lawn susceptible to drying out and summer weeds.
